Joey Chou’s distinct style is brightly-colored and filled with geometric shapes and playful whimsy, blending realism with abstraction. His creative process begins with experimenting both in Photoshop and with acrylic paint and cut paper, sculpting color and shape into bold, energetic compositions.
His favorite books to work on have explored nature, animals, magical creatures, and the wonders of space and science. Looking forward, Joey also dreams of illustrating ghost stories and ancient myths from around the world.
A professional highlight for Joey was winning the 2024 Anna Dewdney Read-Together Award—co-sponsored by Penguin Young Readers, the Children’s Book Council, and Every Child a Reader—for illustrating KINDergarten: Where Kindness Matters Every Day by Vera Ahiyya. He is equally proud of NaiNai’s Mountain by Livia Blackburne, a deeply personal project that enabled him to honor his home country, Taiwan.
Inspired to become a children’s book illustrator since having discovered Ezra Jack Keats's The Snowy Day, Joey now creates his own classics in a quiet but inspiration-packed Los Angeles studio.
When not drawing, Joey enjoys conveyor belt sushi, exploring Death Valley, watching anime, fostering dogs, and browsing yard sales to glimpse lives once lived.
