French illustrator Marc Majewski lives and works in Berlin. He has been drawing and painting since early childhood, when his aunt, who worked for a children’s publishing house, first introduced him to the enchanting world of picture books.
Marc primarily uses acrylic paints and watercolor to create illustrations that have been characterized as playful, expressive, colorful, and energetic. To achieve a desired sense of effortlessness and lightness in his work, he often redraws and repaints the same image multiple times until it captures that feeling. He has an affinity for poetic texts infused with humor, and also enjoys projects rooted in real-life stories and biographies—like Parks, which offered him the opportunity to do extensive research and create detailed, large-scale scenes inspired by German “wimmelbücher" (seek-and-find-style picture books containing panoramic, intricately detailed illustrations). A highlight of Marc's career is his recent New York Times Best Illustrated Picture Book Award for his art in As Edward Imagined: The Story of Edward Gorey in Three Acts (written by Matthew Burgess).
Outside of bookmaking, Marc is fascinated by Scandinavian and Danish design, has a fondness for wooden furniture and crêpes, and loves dogs, hiking, and writing letters.
